Dr. Charles Wright, an obstetrician and gynecologist, envisioned an institution to preserve Black history after visiting a memorial to Danish World War II heroes in Denmark. As a result of this visit, he was convinced that African Americans needed a similar resource center to document, preserve and educate the public on their history, life and culture. As a result, The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is the world's largest institution dedicated to the African American experience. The museum, which is located in Detroit Michigan, provides learning opportunities, exhibitions, programs and events based on collections and research that explore the diverse history and culture of African Americans and their African origins. The museum houses over 30,000 artifacts and archival materials and serves its community as a place of exploration and celebration.

(Day 1)Bessie Coleman: Bessie Coleman was an American civil aviator. She was the first female pilot of African American descent and the first person of African American descent to hold an international pilot license. Coleman was born on January 26, 1892 in Atlanta, Texas, the tenth of thirteen children and her family moved to Waxahachie, Texas when she was two years old. At the age of 23 she heard stories from pilots returning home from World War I and she became interested in being a pilot. She could not gain admission to any American flight schools because she was black and a woman so she studied abroad. Coleman became not only the first African-American woman to earn an international aviation license, but the first African American woman in the world to earn an aviation pilot's license. Bessie Coleman died at the age of 34. She did not live long enough to fulfill her dream of establishing a school for young black aviators, but her pioneering achievements serve as an inspiration for a generation of African American men and women.
